Saint Paul, Minn., Oct. 5, 2007—The Board of Directors of the Bush Foundation yesterday announced that Peter C. Hutchinson, co‑founder of Public Strategies Group, will join the organization as its next president. He will succeed Anita M. Pampusch, who is retiring after serving as president for the past 10 years. Hutchinson will be the third president in the Foundation’s 54-year history.

“The Bush Foundation has recently committed to new strategic initiatives to identify, support and develop community leadership throughout our region,” said Kathy Tunheim, chair of the Bush Foundation’s Board. “Peter Hutchinson has an exemplary career demonstrating innovative, courageous leadership, and we believe he is just the right executive to take up the challenges we see as our priorities throughout the region.”

The Foundation’s new strategic plan focuses on promoting healthy people, thriving cultural life and economic vitality to strengthen communities in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Gordon M. Sprenger, a director and chair of the search committee, said, “We were extremely gratified by the high caliber of candidates we had the opportunity to meet in the course of this national search. The end-result—an individual already familiar with the Bush Foundation’s work and role in the broader community—is an added benefit. We look forward with great enthusiasm to Peter’s leadership as the Foundation moves forward.”

Hutchinson said, “My whole career in business, government and nonprofits has been a reflection of my passion for improving the vitality of our communities. I am thrilled and honored to have this unique opportunity to continue that work in the setting of a major independent foundation. Later in October, the first-ever Bush Fellows Summit will offer tangible evidence of the impact one foundation can have on a region. The credit for that goes to the leadership of Humphrey Doermann [Foundation president 1971-1997] and now Anita Pampusch. They set a high standard. The Bush Board has just committed the Foundation to extending and deepening its impact in our region. I am excited about being part of making that happen.”

Hutchinson is co-founder of the Public Strategies Group, a St. Paul company that redesigns and transforms governments throughout the world. Hutchinson has also served as the vice president for external affairs and chairman of the Dayton Hudson Foundation, commissioner of finance for the State of Minnesota, superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools and as a deputy mayor in Minneapolis. In 2006, he was the Independence Party candidate for Minnesota governor. Hutchinson is coauthor with David Osborne of The Price of Government: Getting the Results We Need in an Age of Permanent Fiscal Crisis. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs.

Babak Armajani, co-founder of the Public Strategies Group, said, “Peter’s skill and experience guiding strategic change for public organizations around the country will be a great asset to the Bush Foundation. My partners and I wish him well and look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership on the Foundation and the communities it serves.”
