Native Nation Rebuilding

We support the self-determination of the 23 sovereign Native nations that share the same geographic area as Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.  Our goal is that, by 2020, all 23 Native nations are exercising self-determination to actively rebuild the infrastructure of nationhood.

Why Focus on Native Nations?

The 23 tribes are sovereign, politically distinct nations with unique histories and challenges. Past approaches to solving these challenges have been dominated by outside entities setting the agenda and outcomes. However, research from Indian Country is clear: when it comes to solving core issues, progress is greatest when tribes exercise their inherent rights of self-determination to create stronger, sustainable governing institutions that work best for their Native nations. Our approach is intended to be consistent with self-determination, where we will collaborate with the tribal leaders on individual tribal agendas for strengthening their governing institutions. Learn more about why we focus on Native nations.

Our Priorities

  • Build tribal partnerships with the leaders of the 23 Native nations.
  • Engage resource partners who can support the tribes with expertise, tools and training.
  • Facilitate an alliance of tribal leaders across the 23 nations.
  • Facilitate partnerships between tribal governments and other governments to collaborate on cross-boundary issues and solving problems.
