Program
Eden Prairie, MNWhen she isn't developing, improving and disseminating world-class neurosurgical techniques for Medtronic's Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy, Sylvia Bartley is thinking of ways to address the disparities in educational success between African-American and Caucasian children. Specifically, she is interested in figuring out how to take the success of high-achieving schools like Minneapolis's Harvest Network and develop an adoptable turn-around strategy that can help close the achievement gap. The Fellowship will allow Sylvia to take time off from Medtronic and focus her time, energy and considerable intellect on this important work.

Updates and Insights from Bush Fellows During Their Leadership Journey

What grounds me? What’s my path and purpose? How do I ensure my actions are in alignment with my personal mission of living consistently with my spiritual awareness? These are the questions I ask myself daily, knowing that I’ll be guided by them to being the best person I can become. Of course there are times when this isn’t the case. So, for me, of utmost importance are remaining open, aware and receptive to new ways of thinking and being, staying connecting with like-minded people, and aligning my passion with my work. All of these are key to achieving my life’s purpose.

My first six months of being a Bush fellow has been an exhilarating one. It started with a whirlwind of congratulations, recognitions, speaking opportunities (e.g. Pollen panel’s, Generation Next and Bush Connect), meetings with a variety of leaders from the profit and non-profit spaces as well as connecting with even more people at Bush Connect. Several people are very happy with and supportive of my Fellowship. It has opened doors to new networks and opportunities that are proving to be invaluable.
