The oil boom brought significant increases in population to rural North Dakota and a more than 100% increase in the number of women seeking assistance from the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC), the only agency in a 100-mile radius that provides crisis services and emergency food, clothing and shelter to women and children fleeing domestic violence.
To meet escalating demands, in 2013 DVCC opened the New Beginnings Campus where women and their children can more easily access the resources needed to break free from domestic abuse. One of only a handful of such projects in the U.S., the Campus provides a dignified setting for people who are in the midst of making difficult, life-changing decisions.
Through 24/7 crisis lines and intervention, legal advocacy, support groups, an emergency shelter and two transitional living apartment buildings, the New Beginnings Campus has tripled the number of survivors DVCC can serve.
